Such a lovely weekend

There’s a lovely friend, whom I’ve met through my boyfriend. She’s an amazing woman; a high school dropout, she went back at age thirty and completed her schooling and then went on to medical school. She’s now a great doctor, who is a workaholic and loves her job.

Boyfriend and her have been friends for a few years now (only ever friends) and I was just getting to know her when she upped sticks and moved to Adelaide. I was very disappointed because she is the sort of person who I have a lot in common with. By this, I mean that she has a professional life in which she displays a totally different persona to the core level, rather like me. Without going into specific details, there is a very wild side in that girl and a hedonistic bent that is hard to beat. She’s funny and literate and incredibly generous and absolutely gorgeous.

She is very loyal as well. She always makes an effort to catch up with us when she comes back for a few days and this weekend she was staying in a house at Ledge Point, a sleepy little seaside town. She invited us for the weekend but we could only do one night, due to work stuff. If I’d worked today, I would have had much needed money but the quality of time spent with her was so very worth every cent I didn’t make.

We drove up after work, bearing copious amounts of alcohol and other bits and pieces. Unfortunately, my leg was hurting so much from work that the couple of hours in the car were really uncomfortable and I retired to bed as soon as we got there; falling  into a miserable doze. I hadn’t taken painkillers that day because I was driving passengers around but I dosed myself up well and was better by the morning.

Today we swam, walked, napped, drank and played scrabble. And we talked. A is  a very social girl and has lots of friends and family so the house was full of people coming and going, with reshuffling of bedrooms and sleeping arrangements.  The house is amazing, almost right on the beach, with a second story wrap around balcony, gazing right out to see. Downstairs there is a games room, complete with space invaders machine and a pool table. There is a big master bedroom leading onto a shared spa bathroom (BF and I had this one) and two smaller bedrooms, filled with bunk beds, besides. Upstairs is another doubleroom and there is a double pull out sofa. I think the house can sleep about fifteen or so.

It isn’t her place but built by a friend as part of a retirement package and she shares the maintenance and upkeep with two or three others. They don’t ever rent it out and only friends are allowed to stay, via personal invitation only, and they allocate out time amongst themselves.  It is equipped with all the mod cons and there is a 4 wheel drive beach buggy and a couple of jetskis as well. You take food to stock up when you are there and make up the beds fresh, washing the sheets and towels before you go.

I was only there for twenty four hours but I’ve come away feeling as though I’ve had a week. I am slightly pink, I have sand all through my hair, there is seaweed in my bits and I started drinking at lunchtime. I played games, walked around in bare feet, had a lovely afternoon snooze and recharged every battery, which is just what I needed.

I wish A didn’t live in Adelaide but I feel confident enough now to claim her as my friend too, rather than just BF’s, and I know we will stay in touch.

Thank you, Dr A, for such a lovely weekend.
